Children are often the symbol of happy-go-lucky times and a carefree attitude. After all, children don’t have much to worry about, or in the extreme case be anxious about; right?

Actually children can suffer from various degrees of anxiety from the more normal (not wanting to take a test) to the more extreme. During National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (May 6-12) many anxiety professionals are addressing parents’ concerns about the anxiety their child may be facing.

According to Jerome Bubrick, PhD the important factor of anxiety and how it affects children is determining the different types of anxiety disorders, and how they differ from an ordinary level of anxiety. He goes on to say that it is estimated 8-10% of American children suffer from an anxiety disorder in a year. So it is important for a parent or guardian to be able to identify anxiety disorder indicators in their child, so that they may be addressed by a professional.

Teachers, and other adults that students interact with while at school, can be a big help in identifying anxiety symptoms in children. In an article written by Jessica Minahan, while anxiety affects one in eight children it often is a hidden disability and goes undiagnosed. It is important for teachers and parents to recognize behavioral signs, such as:

With major stories, like Giant’s player Aubrey Huff experiencing an 8 hour panic attack, hitting national news it really does make you wonder ‘Who exactly suffers from anxiety?’

According to the National Institute of Mental Health 18.1% of US adults suffer from an anxiety disorder within a 12 month period. To put it in perspective you have to realize that anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental disorders an American can experience.

Those suffering from anxiety don’t always fit into the mold of a high-stress lifestyle or the socially awkward individuals.
